It has been rainy here the last couple weeks and it has kept me at a stand still on the project as far as physical work. I had a chance to speak to a good friend of mine that happens to be an excellent architect/engineer. I wanted to see what he thought about my footings because I started to think that the lateral trust of the arch openings make it necessary to tie them together and that the plan to go 3x3x3 is a bit much. We discussed a few things and now that he has confirmed some of my suspicions, I am abandoning the footing idea in favor of a slab which will be 5’x5’x12″. This will be plenty of depth and will provide good support for the oven. This will be the thinnest slab to date….Ed J’s pizza oven slab was 13″ but it sat directly on top of bedrock. There are some things I am going to do to reduce the overall weight of this thing and they will be reveled as progress is made. Sit tight for progress on the wood fired earth oven….more stuff will happen soon. Next up, the footing is going to be excavated and poured….additionally I will be cutting and chiseling granite for the rib vault and outer arches.
In the meantime I will probably continue to dream of Rib Vaults……

Ribbed Vaults is something good to dream about.
It is going to be pointed right? You have a drawing of the ribs yet?
Matt Sevigny says
I have been flip flopping with what to do. The arches were originally going to be Roman, then catenary or pointed. It will depend on how the rib arches layout really.
No drawing of the ribs yet. I haven’t been able to do any layout on them because of the rain or I have been busy. They wont be overly refined either, I want to keep this as simple as possible.

It has been decided. No catenary arch….this base will have pointed arches!
