I’m new to this forum and I have been researching pizza oven building for a while now and I have some specific questions. I’ve decided to to build my pizza oven from scratch with my own plans and using the gym ball method for the dome.
1. I have seen several videos where some builders use a mixture of vermiculite and cement only for the dome and others who use only concrete. I want to use a combination of the two,. I will make a concrete layer of about 2 inches, then chicken wire, then another 2 inches of concrete. I will then apply a 3 inch layer of vermiculite mixed with cement. Even though the floor of the oven will provide the majority of heat retention I want the dome to do so also. The outer layer of vermiculite mixture will insulate the dome and help in preventing radiating heat outward.
Please advise if anyone sees a problem with this plan.
2. I will build a portable base using 4 x 4s. I have to do more research on the layers of components that create the floor of the oven but it is my understanding that the final surface can be just refractory bricks or a thin layer of fire resistant concrete can be applied or just placed into the gaps. Is there a good resource for doing this stage?
3. I am undecided whether to pour the vent tube or to insert a steel one. I would then buy a vent cap for either method although I am considering molding the vent out of concrete or vermiculite mixture also.
This is my first post and would appreciate any thoughts on my initial plans.
